From 1962 through 1974 the Freedom Tower served as the Cuban Assistance Center, offering help and relief to Cuban refugees who sought political protection from Fidel Castro. Why Miami? Well, Many Cubans fled to California, Chicago, and Florida but the majority made their way to Miami because it was closest to Cuba.
